Getting to Girona by train is easy. Think twice if you buy tickets in advance as you may risk losing them in case of delay.

A) BUS. There is a bus from the airport to Girona, but it is not cheap and it stops in Barcelona station which is a pain. There are only a few buses per day, but it may be comfortable to take it if it is just about to leave when you arrive. You pop in and forget everything until you arrive, no transfer etc. Check the time table here:

B) TRAIN. First you need to take the train to Barcelona, and then another train to Girona. You can't buy in advance tickets for normal trains, only for fast trains that leave from Barcelona city. The tricks are:

0) If you arrive at terminal 1, transfer by bus to terminal 2. Free, about 20 min. I believe it is faster than taking a bus to Barcelona, as then you'll need a long transfer to Barcelona Sants train station (main) or Barcelona Passeig de Gracia (long walk). Normal trains to Girona leave from Barcelona Sants and pass by Passeig de Gràcia.
1) at the airport, take a train to Barcelona even if there is a bus, as you will already be in the train station.
2) buy just one ticket from aeroport to Girona, you save money. Also, I advice you NOT buying return as depending on the timetable of the return you may need to buy a fast train to save you from the stress of unknowns...
3) in Barcelona, don't get off at Barcelona Sants, which is the central, but at the next, Barcelona Passeig de Gràcia. It is the same rail that will take you to Girona, so you won't neet 15 minutes walk in the central station.
